Betsy Key Anderton Tipton, Ph.D.

Teaching & Therapy Philosophy

Betsy believes in the transformative power of nature to foster growth—both academically and personally. Her approach emphasizes:

  1. Experiential Learning: Students and therapy participants actively engage in planting, growing, and nurturing projects to gain hands-on skills.

  2. Inclusive Environment: Customized instruction that meets a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and interests.

  3. Reflective Practice: Encouraging learners to analyze their experiences—whether it’s a successful harvest or a therapeutic gardening session—to reinforce self-awareness and confidence.

Personal Interests

When she’s not teaching or designing horticultural therapy sessions, Betsy enjoys:

  • Hiking and exploring local trails to discover new native plant species.

  • Experimenting with homemade fertilizers and organic pest management techniques in her personal garden.

  • Volunteering at local community gardens and teaching workshops on seed saving, composting, and pollinator-friendly landscaping.
